Frequently Asked Questions: Task 2 Essays

Essential answers for candidates preparing for IELTS Writing Task 2.

How much is Task 2 weighted compared to Task 1?
Writing Task 2 contributes two-thirds (66.7%) of your total IELTS Writing score, while Task 1 contributes one-third (33.3%). Because Task 2 carries double the weight, you should always reserve at least 40 minutes of your test time for it.
What happens if my essay is under 250 words?
If your essay falls below 250 words, examiners apply an automatic penalty under Task Response, making it virtually impossible to achieve Band 7.0 or above regardless of your grammar or vocabulary accuracy.
Should I write more than 300 words?
There is no penalty for writing more than 250 words, but essays over 320 words often leave insufficient time for proofreading and introduce avoidable grammatical and spelling slips. An ideal target length is 260 to 290 words.
Is Task 2 different for Academic and General Training?
Both modules share the exact same format, scoring rubrics, 250-word requirement, and 40-minute duration. General Training topics tend to focus on everyday societal or family themes, whereas Academic topics may focus slightly more on scientific, technological, or abstract issues.
