IELTS GT Task 1 Letter Requirements

Master the four scoring pillars specific to General Training Task 1 correspondence.

Purpose & Bullets

Clear Purpose & All 3 Bullets

Your opening paragraph must state the exact purpose of writing. You must develop all three bullet points from the prompt equally with sufficient detail.

Register

Consistent Tone & Register

Maintain consistent formality throughout. Formal letters require respectful vocabulary and no contractions; personal letters require natural friendly phrasing.

Organization

Logical Paragraphing

Dedicate one distinct paragraph to each bullet point. Use cohesive transition phrases between points rather than repetitive formulaic statements.

Accuracy

Salutation & Sign-Off Match

Use correct pairings: 'Dear Sir/Madam' with 'Yours faithfully', known recipients with 'Yours sincerely', and friends with 'Best regards' or 'Warmly'.

Frequently Asked Questions: GT Task 1

Common questions about writing high-scoring General Training letters.

How many words should an IELTS GT letter contain?
You must write a minimum of 150 words. In practice, aiming for 160–180 words gives you enough room to fully expand all three prompt bullets without running out of time for Task 2.
Do I need to include addresses or dates on the letter?
No. In IELTS General Training Task 1, addresses and dates are completely unnecessary and are not scored. Begin directly with the appropriate salutation (e.g. 'Dear Mr. Davies,').
Can I use contractions like 'don't' or 'I'm'?
Contractions are acceptable and natural in informal letters written to a friend or relative. In formal or semi-formal letters (to an employer, manager, or authority), do not use contractions—write 'do not' and 'I am' instead.
How much time should I spend on Task 1?
You have 60 minutes for the entire IELTS writing test. We recommend spending no more than 20 minutes on Task 1, reserving a full 40 minutes for Task 2, which counts for twice as many marks.
