Four Keys to Band 7+ in Academic Task 1

Examiner requirements for charts, graphs, tables, and process diagrams.

Essential Overview

Clear Overall Overview

Without a clear overview highlighting the main trends or stages, the highest possible score for Task Achievement is Band 5.0. Always include an explicit overview paragraph.

Factual Tone

No Personal Opinions

Academic Task 1 is purely an objective factual summary. Never speculate, explain reasons why data changed, or express personal feelings about the information.

Grouping Data

Logical Data Grouping

Do not list numbers mechanically item by item. Group related data into 2 coherent body paragraphs focusing on high/low extremes, contrasts, and significant shifts.

Trend Vocabulary

Varied Trend & Degree Verbs

Use diverse descriptors: 'increased exponentially', 'remained relatively constant', 'fluctuated marginally', 'witnessed a sharp downturn', 'surpassed'.

Frequently Asked Questions: Academic Task 1

Expert tips for the IELTS Academic 20-minute visual task.

Where should I place the overview paragraph?
You can place the overview either immediately following the introductory paraphrase or at the very end of the report. Most examiners recommend placing it as paragraph 2 so that the general trend is established before detailing specific figures.
Do I need to report every single number from the graph?
No. The prompt instructs you to 'select and report the main features and make comparisons where relevant'. Trying to list every data point causes your report to become an unreadable list, which lowers your Coherence and Task Achievement scores.
What is the minimum word count for Academic Task 1?
You must write at least 150 words. Reports under 150 words receive an automatic penalty on Task Achievement. We recommend aiming for 160–185 words.
How should I prepare for map or process diagram tasks?
For processes, focus on passive voice constructions and sequential connectors ('initially', 'subsequently', 'following this'). For maps, master prepositions of location ('to the northeast of', 'adjacent to') and transformation vocabulary ('demolished', 'redeveloped into').
